Flow Switch Testing

A flow switch is an electro-mechanical device that links the buildings fire suppression or sprinkler system with the fire alarm system. Flow switches only activate the fire alarm when they detect water moving in the sprinkler system, for example when a sprinkler head has been activated. They do not turn on or off the delivery of water.

All flow switches must be tested in accordance with TB203.3.2 as part of a mandatory quarterly service routine. Before the test, the pressure on both sides of the flow switch should be equal, maintaining an equilibrium with no water flowing.

During the test, water is discharged from the down-stream end of the pipe which causes a drop in pressure. In the case of a looped system, the water would be pumped around a closed circuit. In either system these changes cause the flow switch to operate and trigger the fire alarm system.

For the test to be valid sufficient water must pass the flow switch to activate it, this is equivalent to one sprinkler head in operation.

To avoid disrupting customers or large work forces, sprinkler flow switches are usually tested before a shopping centre opens or work begins on the main production areas.

Firecom engineers are accustomed to working at unusual hours, and once on site, they can investigate all other mechanical works or systems such as the service of suppression systems or fire extinguishers.
